The practicum is a supervised, hands-on experience where students apply their learned skills in a real-world community health setting. It lasts for 40 hours and is essential for completing the certification.
Program administrators will assist in assigning practicum placements that are convenient and relevant to the student's learning goals. Practicum supervisors will provide guidance and evaluation during this period.
To receive certification, students must complete all instructional hours, successfully finish the practicum, and pass the final assessment, which includes quizzes, assignments, and a final exam.
Upon successful completion of the program requirements, certificates will be issued within four weeks. Graduates will also be invited to an online graduation ceremony.

Once an individual completes a CHW certification training from programs accredited by the Department, they may then apply for CHW certification by the Department. Complete information on the certification process can be found on this webpage. Individuals must be 18 years or older; submit a form of age verification; submit a document of successful completion from a CHW certification training program. The program is currently seeking accreditation by the Maryland Department of Health; and possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent. There is no charge to apply for a CHW certificate by the Department. The direct link to the application which is housed on Maryland OneStop is here.
